The measurement of ultra-high-energy (UHE) neutrinos gives insights into the most violent phenomena in our universe and will allow to solve the century-long mystery of the origin of cosmic rays. To be able to measure the low flux of UHE neutrinos on Earth, a new detector technology has been developed, instrumenting polar ice sheets with radio antennas to search for neutrinos passing through the ice.
I will give an overview of the emerging field of UHE neutrino astronomy, discuss how radio signals are generated in the ice and outline the detection principle. I will present the experimental efforts to discover these elusive particles with large arrays of radio antennas on the Ross Ice Shelf, the South Pole and central Greenland.

The lecture is an obligatory teaching test for those applying for admittance as docent and it should be possible for students and others with basic academic education in the relevant field to follow it. The lecture lasts 40-45 minutes with subsequent discussion. The lecture will be given in English.
